Chapter Twenty-Four

Even with weeks passing me by, I had a hard time with mind reading. Sometimes it turned on full blast—I could hear everyone, or it was completely shut off—I could hear no one. And it never worked in my favor. If only Tyler were there to help me to use it to my advantage. I had a hard time of it, but I didn’t let it consume me or drive me insane as it had done to others in the past. I’d accepted the gift, and the fact that I still couldn’t control it, but I knew one day I would have it under control, and that kept me sane.

Ty took me to see the band his father managed and to his surprise, they all knew me. I explained we had been there together before the fire and this, too, was part of his memory loss. I hated lying to him.

The night ended, and the band sounded great. We walked to the car and were standing there gazing at one another. Ty’s body was close to mine and Chris, the drummer of the band, called out, “Dude, you really should kiss her. She’s a keeper!”

I blushed and was thankful for the dark. He opened the door for me and I got in quickly.

We drove in silence to my house. Once there we headed to the backyard, and sat on the wooden swing my father had recently built. We were stargazing. I glanced over at him and without turning to me, he asked, “Do you want me to kiss you?” He still didn’t look at me, and I couldn’t not look at him. I did want him to kiss me but I didn’t answer. My heart beat fast with excitement, but in my gut I felt guilty. It had been a while since I’d seen my Tyler, and I knew he would never come back. I mulled this over in my brain and finally Ty slowly turned his head to me. Our eyes met, and there was something in his eyes, something new. I wouldn’t say he had a spark, but I knew we were going to kiss and it would be his first kiss. Soft and sweet. A very innocent kiss.

I buried my head in his shoulder and asked, “So does this mean we’re going out?” Because I knew he wouldn’t have, and although I felt loss and guilt over my Tyler, I was ready to move on. I needed to move on. The time had come.

“I don’t know, are we?” He sounded surprised.

“I think so.” I smiled at him. He stood to leave. It was getting late. We walked around the house to his car hand in hand, and we stood nervously in front of it. He leaned in to kiss me again. This kiss, not so innocent. His lips parted, and his warm tongue met mine. This kiss was swoon-worthy. I should have known it would be. He pulled away, and with shaky knees, I watched Ty drive away.
